Young Authors Greenhouse (YAG) seeks $11,000 through ArtsMatch for a year-long field trip program and inclusive volunteer training. YAG is a writing and tutoring organization that inspires children ages 6-18 from under-resourced communities to grow their imaginations through writing.
YAG uses writing and publishing programs, creative partnerships with schools, and a community of engaged volunteers to build confidence, persistence, and creative thinking that are fundamental to development. YAG also believes in the transformational power that individual adult attention has on student learning and resilience.
The field trip program is an opportunity for up to 84 JCPS elementary classrooms to visit Young Authors Greenhouse, located in Portland, for a two-hour, high-energy, theatrical writing experience. Students will be tasked with writing a completely original story with the help of volunteers. Every student goes home with a bound book of their story. The curriculum will focus on Social Emotional Learning and use storytelling to explore conflict resolution. YAG will work with teachers to prepare students for the workshop and incorporate curriculum the teachers are already using.
This opportunity will also fund volunteer training for YAG. Volunteers are vital to the work of YAG and to be an inclusive organization that supports and encourages diversity, YAG has designed a race, gender, diversity, and inclusion training for their volunteers. This training will equip volunteers with language and skills to work with students and other volunteers of different backgrounds and identities and to face and challenge implicit biases. This volunteer training will help to ensure a positive and culturally sensitive experience for all the students who walk through the doors of YAG.
